A short article by Barbara Ann about how she got started with the family genealogy, the book and the web site.
Hi Family!
Just a wee note to explain how I started working on the family genealogy and how to navigate your way through it.
In the late 1980s my daughter Stephanie gave me a family tree shareware program. After inputting my immediate family, I started with my Aunts, Uncles and cousins. I didn't know anything from the past but one day I was telling my sister Eleanor of my plight and lo and behold -- like magic -- she had a list of a various assorted relatives and a lot of kitchen table gossip she had heard many years earlier.
Armed with this new information, I was off to the Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS). The LDS has extensive records and the best part is they are free. I had some luck but, nothing startling. I decided to concentrate on my Grandfather's family (Hugh Dupong Scott) and it was my goal to be as accurate as possible. From his birth in 1878 to Sophia Butler's birth in 2003, I can say that we have over hundred years and 200 people as descendants of Hugh Dupong Scott. You are encouraged to look at the entry for your family to confirm the inforamtion and fill in any gaps.
When the wonderful world of the Internet came around I posted our family info on various web sites. I would check them on a regular basis hoping to hear that someone else was researching this Scott Family. After five years of not being contacted, I had just about given up hope. My children had given me a trip to Scotland for a Mother's day present. Within two weeks of receiving this wonderful gift, I received a phone call from a researcher/relative in Scotland. Jean Scott Kesson's Grandfather William Scott was the brother of my Grandfather Hugh Dupong Scott. This, of course, was terrific and with my trip being planed for that fall (2003) we were making plans to meet and compare notes -- our common link being our Great Grandfather Joseph Scott. He is referred to throughout this Web Site as Captain Joseph Scott - Generation One.
We are working on a section on the Dupongs: the family of Captain Joe's wife Ann Dupong; and the Logans : my Grandmother Elizabeth Logan Scott's family.
We have five living generations in our family today, not a direct line but, still five generations: Jean Douglas Scott Deignan (1) her niece Eleanor Margaret Scott O’Hara (2) her niece Nancy Ann Scott (3)her daughter Lisa Scott (4) and Lisas son Jacob John William Dalziel (5).
Jean and I continue to research this never ending family but, please, anyone out there with information do not hesitate to contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
ENJOY YOUR FAMILY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
